—Dr. Griffin, por favor háblenos un poco sobre usted y por qué se le conoce como El Hombre Invisible.

—Yo soy científico y he teorizado que si se cambia el índice refractivo de una persona para coincidir exactamente con el del aire y su cuerpo no absorbe ni refleja la luz, entonces no será visible. Logré llevar a cabo este proceso conmigo mismo, pero luego no pude volver a ser visible. Desde entonces sufro de inestabilidad mental.

—Por favor, háblenos sobre la novela en la que se narra su historia original.

—Sí, con mucho gusto. El Hombre Invisible (en inglés The Invisible Man) es una novela de ciencia ficción del escritor británico H.G. Wells. La obra fue originalmente publicada en entregas en la revista Pearson´s Magazine en 1897 y como novela el mismo año.

—¿A partir de qué momento empezó su historia como El Hombre Invisible?

—Mi historia comienza en el pueblo de Iping, en West Sussex (Inglaterra), cuando llegué como un misterioso forastero que buscaba alojamiento en la posada local, The Coach and Horses, y desperté la curiosidad y el miedo de los lugareños.

—¿Por qué motivo los habitantes del pueblo le tenían miedo?

—Me convertí en la comidilla del pueblo y puse nerviosos a sus habitantes por mi manera de vestir y mi extraño comportamiento. Como usted puede darse cuenta, llevo puesto un grueso abrigo largo y guantes, tengo el rostro completamente cubierto por vendas, grandes gafas y un sombrero de ala ancha que me lo acabo de quitar para la fotografía que ilustrará esta entrevista. Soy extremadamente solitario y exijo permanecer a solas porque empleo la mayor parte de mi tiempo en mi habitación trabajando con aparatos de laboratorio y sustancias químicas.

—¿Qué hechos comenzaron a suceder a partir de su llegada al pueblo de Iping?

—A partir de mi llegada al pueblo, comenzaron a suceder una serie de misteriosos robos en varias casas donde las víctimas no lograban ver al ladrón.

—¿Qué sucedió a continuación?

—Una mañana en la que los posaderos, Mr. Y Mrs. Hall, pasaron por mi habitación les entró la curiosidad cuando advirtieron que mis ropas estaban esparcidas por el suelo, pero no había rastro de mí. Sin embargo, el mobiliario cobró vida y una silla voló por el aire empujándolos fuera de la habitación. Más tarde, ese mismo día, Mrs. Hall me interrogó respecto a lo sucedido y le revelé que yo era invisible al quitarme las vendas y las gafas para mostrar que no había nada debajo. Ella huyó horrorizada y la policía intentó atraparme, pero me quité toda la ropa y escapé.

—¿Qué es eso tan importante que ocurrió después de que usted escapó aquel día?

—Huí a las colinas, donde asusté con mi invisibilidad a un vagabundo de nombre Thomas Marvel, y la verdadera trama de mi historia se desata a partir del momento en que yo lo obligo a ser mi ayudante en una serie de fechorías.

—Sí, para mí es un placer hablar de estas cosas. El Hombre Invisible es una serie televisiva de ciencia ficción estrenada en el año de 1975 en NBC, inspirada en la novela homónima de H. G. Wells. El Dr. Daniel Westin (David McCallum) y su esposa la Dra. Kate Westin trabajan en una empresa llamada Klae Corporation en experimentos de desintegración molecular y descubren que el efecto secundario producido durante las investigaciones es la invisibilidad de los objetos. El Dr. Daniel decide entonces experimentar en animales a fin de encontrar aplicaciones médicas a su descubrimiento. Sin embargo, su jefe desea emplear sus logros con fines bélicos, por lo que el científico, que en este caso me encarna a mí, decide experimentar en sí mismo y destruir su invento.

Debido a que el efecto del proceso es ya irreversible decide ir con su amigo el Dr. Nick Maggio, famoso cirujano plástico quien le crea una máscara y un par de guantes con un material especial llamado Dermaplex, de consistencia idéntica a la piel humana. Esto le facilitará al Dr. Westin aparecer en público.

—¿Alguna recomendación para nuestros lectores?

Sí, quisiera resaltar que, si bien la novela original fue categorizada en el género de terror, recomiendo su lectura porque expone los eventuales  riesgos de una ambición desmedida, manifiesta a través de los experimentos científicos.

—Dr. Griffin, please tell us a little about yourself and why you are known as The Invisible Man.

—I am a scientist and I have theorized that if a person’s refractive index is changed to exactly match that of air and their body neither absorbs nor reflects light, then they will not be visible. I managed to carry out this process with myself, but then I could not become visible again. Since then I have suffered from mental instability.

—Please tell us about the novel in which your original story is told.

—Yes, with pleasure. The Invisible Man is a science fiction novel by British writer H.G. Wells. The work was originally published in installments in Pearson’s Magazine in 1897 and as a novel the same year.

—From what moment did your story as The Invisible Man begin?

—My story begins in the village of Iping, in West Sussex, England, when I arrived as a mysterious stranger seeking accommodation at the local inn, The Coach and Horses, and aroused the curiosity and fear of the locals.

—Why were the townspeople afraid of you?

—I became the talk of the town and made its inhabitants nervous with my way of dressing and my strange behavior. As you can see, I am wearing a thick long coat and gloves, my face is completely covered by bandages, large glasses and a wide-brimmed hat that I have just taken off for the photograph that will illustrate this interview. I am extremely reclusive and demand to be alone because I spend most of my time in my room working with laboratory equipment and chemicals.

—What events began to happen after your arrival in the town of Iping?

—After my arrival in town, a series of mysterious robberies began to happen in several houses where the victims could not see the thief.

—What happened next?

—One morning when the innkeepers, Mr. and Mrs. Hall, passed by my room, they became curious when they noticed that my clothes were scattered on the floor, but there was no sign of me. However, the furniture came to life and a chair flew through the air pushing them out of the room. Later that day, Mrs. Hall questioned me about what had happened and I revealed that I was invisible by removing my blindfolds and glasses to show that there was nothing underneath. She fled in horror and the police tried to catch me, but I took off all my clothes and escaped.

—What is so important that happened after you escaped that day?

—I fled to the hills, where I scared a homeless man named Thomas Marvel with my invisibility, and the true plot of my story unfolds from the moment I force him to be my assistant in a series of misdeeds.

—Please tell us about the television series that premiered in 1975 on NBC, inspired by the novel that tells your story.

—Yes, it is a pleasure for me to talk about these things. The Invisible Man is a science fiction television series premiered in 1975 on NBC, inspired by the novel of the same name by H. G. Wells. Dr. Daniel Westin (David McCallum) and his wife Dr. Kate Westin work at a company called Klae Corporation in molecular disintegration experiments and discover that the side effect produced during the research is the invisibility of objects. Dr. Daniel then decides to experiment on animals in order to find medical applications for his discovery. However, his boss wants to use his achievements for war purposes, so the scientist, who in this case plays me, decides to experiment on himself and destroy his invention.

Because the effect of the process is now irreversible, he decides to go with his friend Dr. Nick Maggio, a famous plastic surgeon, who creates a mask and a pair of gloves with a special material called Dermaplex, identical in consistency to human skin. This will make it easier for Dr. Westin to appear in public.
