Charles Spencer, Londres, 16 de abril de 1889-Corsier-sur-Vevey, Suiza, 25 de diciembre de 1977) fue un actor, humorista, compositor, productor, guionista, director, escritor y editor británico. Adquirió gran popularidad en el cine mudo gracias a las múltiples películas que realizó con su personaje Charlot. Se le considera un símbolo del humorismo y del cine mudo. Hacia finales de la Primera Guerra Mundial, era uno de los hombres más reconocidos de la cinematografía mundial.

Hijo de cantantes y artistas de variedades de origen judío, Charles Chaplin fue, es y será una de las figuras claves de la historia del cine y hoy se cumplen 131 años de su nacimiento en 1889. Atraído desde muy pequeño por el mundo de la interpretación, formó parte de varias compañías ambulantes de aficionados hasta que aterrizó en Hollywood en 1913 y, un año después, estrenó su primer corto, ‘Charlot periodista’, y con el que nacería el personaje que le haría famoso en todo el mundo. El ingenuo y tierno vagabundo al que dio vida en esta primera cinta se convertiría más adelante en bailarín, camarero, ladrón elegante, falso dentista, prestamista, emigrante, tramoyista de cine… Un rol al que dio cierre en 1925 con ’La quimera del oro’.

En 1929 ganó su primer Oscar por ‘El circo’ y dos años más tarde estrenó la maravillosa ‘Luces de la ciudad’. ‘Tiempos modernos’, ‘El gran dictador’ o ‘Candilejas’ son otros de sus títulos más míticos y con un denominador común: una feroz crítica a la sociedad moderna originada tras la revolución industrial. Y fue precisamente esta innegable característica de su cine fue la que le llevó a declarar ante el Comité de Actividades Antinorteamericanas en 1949, que ordenó su detención tras regresar de un viaje por Europa. Chaplin expresó su resentimiento a través de la película ‘Un rey en Nueva York’.

Casado cuatro veces (con Mildred Harris, Lita Grey, Paulette Goddard y Oona O’Neill) fue padre de 11 hijos y falleció el 25 de diciembre de 1977, a los 88 años, dejando un legado de valor incalculable a través de las más de 70 películas que dirigió y protagonizó.

He gained great popularity in silent cinema thanks to the multiple films he made with his character Charlot. He is considered a symbol of humor and silent cinema. Towards the end of the First World War, he was one of the most recognized men in world cinema.

Son of singers and variety artists of Jewish origin, Charles Chaplin was, is and will be one of the key figures in the history of cinema and today marks 131 years since his birth in 1889. Attracted from a very young age to the world of acting , he was part of several traveling amateur companies until he landed in Hollywood in 1913 and, a year later, he premiered his first short, ‘Charlot journalist’, and with which the character that would make him famous throughout the world would be born. The naive and tender vagabond whom he gave life to in this first film would later become a dancer, waiter, elegant thief, fake dentist, moneylender, emigrant, film stagehand… A role that he closed in 1925 with ‘The Gold Chimera.”
