DISPARATES NEWS: Entrevista con el Tte. Columbo. Interview with Lt. Columbo (Spanish & English post).

Queridos lectores, hoy iniciamos la sección de entrevistas a personajes de series famosas. Antes de presentar a nuestro invitado especial, debo aclarar que en el Pent House de la Torre Planetaria donde está ubicada la sede física de Disparates News, contamos con un ascensor especial que funciona como máquina del tiempo y es esa la razón por la que hemos podido realizar la proeza de entrevistar al Tte. Columbo, protagonista de la famosa serie que lleva su nombre y de la cual hacemos un breve resumen a continuación:

Columbo (llamada así también en Hispanoamérica y Colombo en España) es una serie de televisión estadounidense creada por Richard Levinson,  y WilliamTheodore Link, quienes fueron guionistas y productores de cine y televisión estadounidense que solían trabajar en colaboración. Tras dos episodios piloto, en 1968 y 1971, en Estados Unidos la serie se emitió regularmente entre 1971 y 1978, y esporádicamente entre 1989 y 2003, hasta un total de 69 episodios. Se sospecha que su nombre se debe a una parodia del físico-culturista Franco Columbu debido a su leve parecido físico en el rostro. Algunos aseguran que el nombre del personaje es Frank Columbo, pero en ninguno de los episodios se le llama con ese primer nombre, y él siempre se presenta a sí mismo como el teniente Columbo. Los propios creadores del programa han aclarado que nunca se le dio un primer nombre. Él también se refería a su esposa como la señora Columbo, tampoco se mencionaba el primer nombre de ésta. Esta serie es considerada un caso particular de telenovela, en el sentido de que no hay créditos comunes a todos los episodios y los episodios son largometrajes creados para televisión. Peter Falk encarna al personaje principal, el teniente Columbo, un detective de homicidios de la Policía de Los Ángeles.

—Tte. Columbo, por favor dígale a nuestros lectores cómo se describe a sí mismo.

—Soy un policía del departamento de homicidios de la policía de Los Ángeles, que visto siempre una gabardina vieja, fumo puros pestíferos y conduzco un Peugeot 403 Grande Luxe Cabriolet destartalado porque el auto bueno lo usa mi esposa. Mi voz es ronca debido a mi condición de fumador. Suelo ingerir comida chatarra o improvisada y mi plato preferido es chile con carne y galletitas saladas, unas veces con judías y otras sin ellas, admito que soy de quienes piensan que en la variedad está el gusto. Tengo un ojo de vidrio, jamás llevo pistola y tampoco recurro a la violencia.

—¿Cuál es la particularidad principal que usted considera que hizo famosa a la serie Columbo?

—La primera particularidad es que esta serie es lo que se conoce como historia de detectives invertida o “howcatchem” porque, salvo excepciones, el crimen se muestra al principio de cada episodio.

—Nos podría explicar un poco más a qué se refiere con “howcatchem”?

—Sí, no hay problema. A mi esposa también le gusta que le explique los casos, así que estoy acostumbrado a hacer este tipo de aclaratorias. Como ya le dije, el crimen se muestra al principio y, a pesar de que se puede observar cómo el asesino prepara un crimen en teoría perfecto, desde el primer momento se sabe que yo lo descubriré, gracias a un detalle menor o un descuido minúsculo del culpable.

—¿Qué es lo que usted considera que caracteriza su manera de atrapar al criminal?

—Una vez que descubro quién es el culpable, no lo dejo en paz ni un segundo, mientras me hago pasar por despistado para engañar al sospechoso y finjo que me retiro del lugar, pero regreso de inmediato con mi perpetua coletilla “solo una cosa más…”

—¿Hay alguna peculiaridad en los crímenes que usted resuelve?

—Sí, la principal peculiaridad es que pocas veces hay sangre en la escena del crimen. En caso de usar arma de fuego, el asesino es excelente tirador pues la víctima muere de forma instantánea, también es el caso si usa algún objeto contundente.

—¿Qué otros rasgos, además de los que nos mencionó al principio, considera usted que lo caracterizan en su día a día, en el ejercicio de su oficio?

—Siempre me presento sin haber dormido porque mi obsesión con los detalles me dificulta el sueño. Mi esposa siempre me reclama, pero no puedo evitarlo. Salgo sin desayunar, pregunto por el dueño de la casa, reviso todos los bolsillos de mi ropa para buscar notas o evidencias y apenas muestro mi placa. Con frecuencia me confunden con un mendigo y, por lo general, protestan por mi manía de fumar. Mi tabaco siempre está a menos de la mitad y apagado, lo enciendo después de hablar con el asesino. Soy muy educado con todo el mundo y siempre alabo de forma desmesurada a los que creo que son los criminales. Debo destacar que ellos, además de ser de clase alta, son educados y correctos, aunque sufren el tormento de mis preguntas que siempre les resultan incómodas, y jamás oponen resistencia al arresto.

—¿Por qué piensa usted que eso sucede y como lo maneja?

—Por su condición social, ellos suelen creerse por encima de los demás a causa de su gran astucia y estatus social. Yo juego la carta de la humildad y la veneración hacia ellos, para hacerles sentirse más confiados. Incluso provoco que ellos me traten como a un idiota para aumentar su seguridad y confianza de que soy un policía aparentemente tan inofensivo que nunca voy a resolver su crimen.

—¿Usted se siente satisfecho con la interpretación hecha por Peter Falk?

—Totalmente, siempre se lo digo cuando nos reunimos para tomarnos un café, mientras recordamos las anécdotas de los casos que yo resolví y los episodios que él grabó. ¡Brillante!

—¿Usted habría preferido otro final para la serie, en el cual su personaje no hubiese muerto?

—Quizás, pero después de dos episodios piloto y diez temporadas de éxito rotundo entiendo que los escritores hayan visto la necesidad de dar fin al personaje con una muerte a causa de un disparo.

—¿Considera usted que su personaje desapareció al haber finalizado la serie?

—No, todo lo contrario. Aquí la muerte no existe y, en la realidad material donde todo tiene un final, Peter Falk me inmortalizó. Eso también se lo agradezco cuando nos reunimos a tomar café, pero él me responde con humildad que es él quien tiene que agradecerme que yo lo haya hecho famoso.

Interview with Lt. Columbo:

Dear readers, today we begin the section of interviews with characters from famous series. Before introducing our special guest, I must clarify that in the Pent House of the Planetary Tower where the physical headquarters of Disparates News is located, we have a special elevator that works as a time machine and that is the reason why we have been able to perform the feat of interviewing Lt. Columbo, protagonist of the famous series that bears his name and of which we make a brief summary below:

Columbo (also called Columbo in Latin America and Colombo in Spain) is an American television series created by Richard Levinson and William Theodore Link, who were American film and television screenwriters and producers who often worked collaboratively. After two pilot episodes, in 1968 and 1971, in the United States the series aired regularly between 1971 and 1978, and sporadically between 1989 and 2003, for a total of 69 episodes. It is suspected that its name is due to a parody of the bodybuilder Franco Columbu due to his slight physical resemblance in the face. Some claim that the character’s name is Frank Columbo, but in none of the episodes is he called by that first name, and he always introduces himself as Lieutenant Columbo. The creators of the program themselves have clarified that he was never given a first name. He also referred to his wife as Mrs. Columbo; his first name was not mentioned either. This series is considered a particular case of soap opera, in the sense that there are no credits common to all the episodes and the episodes are feature films created for television. Peter Falk plays the main character, Lieutenant Columbo, a homicide detective for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Let’s get started!

—Lt. Columbo, please tell our readers how you describe yourself.

—I’m a cop from the homicide department of the Los Angeles police, who always wears an old trench coat, smokes stinking cigars, and drives a beat-up Peugeot 403 Grande Luxe Cabriolet because my wife uses the good car. My voice is hoarse due to my smoking habit. I usually eat junk or improvised food and my favorite dish is chili with meat and crackers, sometimes with beans and sometimes without, I admit that I am one of those who think that variety is the essence of taste. I have a glass eye, I never carry a gun and I don’t resort to violence either.

—What is the main feature that you consider made the Columbo series famous?

—The first peculiarity is that this series is what is known as an inverted detective story or “howcatchem” because, with some exceptions, the crime is shown at the beginning of each episode.

—Could you explain a little more to us what you mean by “howcatchem”?

-Yes, no problem. My wife also likes me to explain cases to her, so I am used to making this type of clarification. As I already told you, the crime is shown at the beginning and, although you can see how the murderer prepares a theoretically perfect crime, from the first moment you know that I will discover it, thanks to a minor detail or a tiny oversight of the culprit.

—What do you consider characterizes your way of catching the criminal?

—Once I find out who the culprit is, I don’t leave him alone for a second, while I pretend to be clueless to fool the suspect and pretend to leave the scene, but I immediately return with my perpetual tagline «just one more thing…»

—Is there any peculiarity in the crimes you solve?

—Yes, the main peculiarity is that there is rarely blood at the crime scene. If a firearm is used, the murderer is an excellent shot because the victim dies instantly; this is also the case if he uses a blunt object.

—What other traits, in addition to those you mentioned at the beginning, do you consider that characterize you in your daily life?

—I always show up without having slept because my obsession with details makes it difficult for me to sleep. My wife always complains to me, but I can’t help it. I leave without having breakfast, ask for the owner of the house, check all the pockets of my clothes to look for notes or evidence and I barely show my badge. They frequently mistake me for a beggar and generally protest my smoking habit. My tobacco is always less than half full and unlit, I always light it after talking to the murderer. I am very polite to everyone and I always give excessive praise to those who I think are the criminals. I must emphasize that, in addition to being from the high class, they are educated and correct, although they suffer the torment of my questions that are always uncomfortable for them, and they never resist arrest.

—Why do you think that happens?

—Due to their social condition, they tend to believe themselves above others because of their great cunning and social status. I play the card of humility and veneration towards them, to make them feel more confident. I even cause them to treat me like an idiot to increase their security and confidence that I am such a seemingly harmless cop that I will never solve their crime.

—Do you feel satisfied with the interpretation given by Peter Falk?

—Absolutely, I always tell him that when we meet for coffee, while we remember the anecdotes of the cases that I solved and the episodes that he recorded. Bright!

—Would you have preferred another ending for the series, in which your character would not have died?

—Perhaps, but after two pilot episodes and ten seasons of resounding success, I understand that the writers have seen the need to end the character with a death due to a gunshot.

—Do you consider that your character disappeared when the series ended?

—No, quite the opposite. Here death does not exist and, in material reality where everything has an end, Peter Falk immortalized me. I also thank him for that when we meet for coffee, but he answers me humbly that he is the one who has to thank me for making him famous.
